I started a greenhouse trial to test the various types of compost, topsoil, fertilizers and planting mixes available on Long Island, New York.
In Test One: September 2009 through December 2009 (plants started from seed)
All the seeds and plants were donated by various growers.
All the (fertilizer) products used are donated from Jennifer's Landscape Vitamins, http://www.landscapevitamins.com/ except the plants on one row.
The seeds on one row of plants were grown with Fafard mix and the "favorite" synthetic commercial fertilizer used by most Long Island Farmers.
Brix measurements will be given at the end of the testing period.
The 3 compost materials we have trialed so far are from Ocean County in New Jersey, Long Island Compost and Alaska Humus' Denali Gold.
The topsoil is from Long Island Compost and is scrape from a local construction site.
The mulch / shred materials from the Long Island area.
The three types of Jennifer's Landscape Vitamins are Granular Vitamins F, T and J custom blends.
The vegetable seeds were donated by Amy Pink of Mega Media Concepts, Denise Zaleski of HCM and Skip Wade from the Green Guerillas and CGP.
